Begin your adventure with a classic route: the Golden Circle. First, head to Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can walk between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Next, visit the amazing Gullfoss waterfall, then take a short drive to Geysir where the erupting geyser Strokkur is.. On your way back, consider a stop at the Laugarás Lagoon in Laugarás for a soak before returning to Landhotel for a cozy evening.

Drive south on road nr. 1  to explore Iceland’s famous coastline. Start at Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall you can walk behind (psst don´t forget to look at Gljúfrabúi), and continue to Skógafoss, one of the country’s most iconic falls. Don’t miss the Skógar Museum nearby for local history. Next, head to Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach with its dramatic basalt columns and sea stacks (make sure to follow the instructions on all warning signs, the waves can be dangerous if you get too close). Cap off your day with a sunset stop at Dyrhólaey, with stunning views of the coastline and Atlantic Ocean. Head back to Landhotel for a nice evening and a delicious dinner.

Best Hotel to See the Northern Lights in Iceland

Experience the Magic of the Northern Lights at Landhotel

If you’re searching for the best hotel to see the Northern Lights in Iceland, look no further than Landhotel in South Iceland. Located far from city light pollution, Landhotel offers exceptional opportunities to witness one of nature’s most breathtaking phenomena from September through the end of April.

Imagine stepping outside—or simply looking out your room window—and watching vibrant green, purple, and pink lights dance across the dark Icelandic sky. At Landhotel, the Northern Lights are not just an excursion; they’re part of the experience.

Why Landhotel Is the Perfect Northern Lights Hotel

Prime Location Away from Light Pollution

One of the biggest challenges of seeing the Aurora Borealis is finding dark skies. Landhotel’s remote location in South Iceland provides ideal viewing conditions, giving guests a front-row seat to the celestial show.

Instead of spending hours driving in search of clear skies, you can spend more time relaxing and enjoying the spectacle directly from the hotel grounds—or even from the comfort of your room.

Advanced Northern Lights Monitoring

To help guests maximize their chances of seeing the aurora, Landhotel operates two highly sensitive Northern Lights cameras. These cameras can detect auroral activity even when it is difficult to see with the naked eye.

The cameras accurately track activity in the sky and provide real-time information about where the Northern Lights are appearing, helping guests know exactly when to step outside and enjoy the view.

Live Northern Lights Streams

Landhotel offers a live stream from its Northern Lights cameras, available both on the hotel’s website and on TV screens throughout the property.

On cold winter evenings, guests can relax indoors while monitoring aurora activity and waiting for the perfect moment to head outside and experience the lights firsthand.

Never Miss the Show: Northern Lights Wake-Up Call

The Northern Lights don’t always follow a schedule. Sometimes the most spectacular displays occur late at night or after midnight.

That’s why Landhotel offers a complimentary Northern Lights wake-up call service for all guests. If the aurora appears while you’re sleeping, hotel staff will notify you so you don’t miss this unforgettable experience.

Coming Soon: Northern Lights Glass Dome

To make aurora viewing even more comfortable, Landhotel is building a dedicated Northern Lights Glass Dome on the hotel’s northeast side.

This unique space will allow guests to stay warm and cozy while enjoying panoramic views of the night sky. Whether you’re watching the stars or waiting for the aurora to appear, the glass dome will provide an extraordinary viewing experience unlike any other in Iceland.

The Best Place to See the Northern Lights in Iceland

Landhotel combines an ideal location, dark skies, advanced aurora monitoring technology, a dedicated wake-up service, and innovative viewing facilities to create one of Iceland’s premier Northern Lights experiences.

If seeing the Aurora Borealis is on your bucket list, Landhotel offers everything you need to make your Northern Lights adventure truly unforgettable.

what is a solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse happens when the Moon moves directly between the Earth and the Sun, obstructing the Sun’s light either in full or in part. This celestial event results in several distinct types of solar eclipses:

  • The Moon entirely obscures the Sun, allowing viewers to see the Sun’s outer atmosphere, known as the corona
  • Partial Solar Eclipse**: Only a portion of the Sun is covered by the Moon.
  • Annular Solar Eclipse**: The Moon is positioned too far from the Earth to fully block the Sun, creating a “ring of fire” effect.

For a total solar eclipse to take place, the alignment of the Earth, Moon, and Sun must be precise, and it can only be witnessed along a narrow path known as the path of totality. Those located outside this path will experience a partial eclipse instead.

When will the solar eclipse occur?

Iceland is set to host a remarkable total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, marking one of the most significant astronomical events in recent history. This spectacular occurrence will offer mesmerizing views as the Moon will completely obscure the Sun for several minutes.

The path and timing of the solar eclipse

Path of Totality: The eclipse will traverse the Arctic Ocean, Greenland, and Iceland, before continuing to Portugal and northern Spain. Remarkably, Iceland is situated to provide some of the finest views of totality.

The Timing :

  – The event will commence with a partial eclipse at approximately 2:04 PM local time.

  – Totality, when the Moon entirely blocks the Sun, is expected to occur around 3:15 PM local time, lasting a few minutes based on your specific location in Iceland.

  – The eclipse will conclude around 4:30 PM local time.

What are the viewing conditions

Iceland’s stunning landscapes, featuring glaciers, volcanoes, and black sand beaches, create an extraordinary backdrop for eclipse viewing. However, weather conditions are crucial. August can bring unpredictable cloud cover, so it is advisable to remain flexible and prepare for multiple viewing locations.

tips for observing

  • Eye Protection: Ensure you have proper solar viewing glasses or eclipse viewers to safely enjoy the event. Landhotel will have proper glasses available for purchase for their guests.
  • Plan Ahead Given Iceland’s popularity and the expected influx of visitors for this event, it’s essential to book your accommodations and transportation well in advance.
  • Eclipse Tours: Special tours are being arranged to provide an enriching experience that combines eclipse viewing with the exploration of Iceland’s breathtaking natural wonders, such as geysers, waterfalls, and hot springs. Such tours will we available on our website closer to this event.

Can it been seen from Landhotel?

At Landhotel you will experience a 99.49% partial solar eclipse lasting for total duration of 1 h 59m 46 s.

Winter travel in iceland

Winter travel in Iceland is like stepping into a winter wonderland, but it requires some planning regarding travelling plans and that you pack properly. Winter travel in Iceland is not only scenic with its snowy landscapes, but also offers unique activities like Northern Lights viewing, glacier hiking, and ice cave exploration. Below is our recommendation how to prepare for a safe, warm, and awe-inspiring Icelandic winter adventure.

Dress accordingly

Icelandic weather can be quite unpredictable, especially in winter when you can experience sunshine, snow, rain and wind all in one day. Prepare by dressing accordingly with warm base layers, insulated jackets and waterproof/windproof outer shells.  Always have thermal mittens, caps and scarfs with you.

For the adventurous ones if you want to go hiking, glacier walks or Northern Lights hunting you should bring with you winter boots, microspikes ( it can be quite slippery if there is ice under the snow), headlamp or flashlight is quite important to have due to limited hours of daylight during the winter time. We recommend to have thermal bottles which you can fill up with hot water, hot chocolate or coffee at Landhotel before you go on your adventurous day trip.  We can prepare lunchboxes for you if you order them the night before.

save driving

If you are travelling independently by renting a car always make sure your rental car is equipped with winter tires and choose 4×4 vehicle at all times.

It is essential to check road conditions every day since the weather can be quite unpredictable.  You should always check the website https://umferdin.is/en for road conditions and https://www.vedur.is for weather conditions.  The main key is to be prepared and stay flexible due to changes in weather conditions.

We recommend to all travellers to visit the website  www.savetravel.is for more information about travelling in Iceland.

landhotel your base accommodation

Landhotel is perfect for winter travellers to stay at due to its location and short distances from main attractions in heart of South Iceland.  You can go on your short daytrips and reach those attractions within an hour or two so you can enjoy them in daylight during the winter months.

At Landhotel you don´t have to go Northern Lights hunting because the Northern Lights stream over the hotel when the conditions are good. You stay in the warmth of the hotel and when they appear the only thing you have to do is to put your warm clothes on and walk outside to see these spectacular lights.  We even have wake-up calls if they do appear after midnight and of course you can follow them on our website or in the Aurora App since we do have live cameras on our rooftop.

winter adventures

Popular tours like glacier hikes or ice cave tours can be booked through our portal at https://landhotel.tourdesk.is/Tour.  We recommend to book early to secure spot on those popular tours.

Winter in Iceland offers an unparalleled opportunity for breathtaking experiences, but adequate preparation is essential. By equipping yourself with appropriate gear, staying informed about the weather conditions, and maintaining a flexible itinerary, you can immerse yourself in the stunning scenery, from the majestic snow-capped mountains and enchanting frozen waterfalls to the awe-inspiring Northern Lights. Thoughtful preparation will not only enhance your safety but also transform your Icelandic winter adventure into a truly memorable journey.

When Can You See the Northern Lights in Iceland?

The best time to see the Northern Lights in Iceland is from late September to early April, and sometimes even into May. During these months, the nights are longer and darker, providing the ideal conditions to witness one of nature’s most spectacular displays.

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, occur when solar particles collide with the Earth’s atmosphere, creating vibrant waves of color across the night sky. Shades of green, pink, red, yellow, blue, and violet can appear in swirling curtains, arcs, and spirals that seem to dance overhead, creating an unforgettable experience for visitors and locals alike.

To maximize your chances of seeing the Northern Lights, it is important to find a location away from city lights with clear views of the sky. One of the best places to experience the aurora is Landhotel, where minimal light pollution and wide-open surroundings create excellent viewing conditions when the weather is favorable.

In addition to clear skies and darkness, monitoring aurora activity is essential. We recommend downloading the Aurora App from the App Store, where you can check the latest forecasts and view our live webcams at Landhotel.

We welcome you to Landhotel to experience the magic of the Northern Lights and create memories that will last a lifetime.

The Icelandic Horse

August 14, 2024 By Blog Comments Off

the icelandic horse

The Icelandic horse is a unique and ancient breed native to Iceland, known for its small but sturdy build, versatility, and incredible endurance. The Icelandic horse, despite its compact size, is renowned for its strength and exceptional riding capabilities. This unique breed has been meticulously preserved in isolation for over a millennium, with strict regulations prohibiting the introduction of any other horse breeds since the 10th century. This steadfast dedication to purity has ensured that the Icelandic horse remains unaltered by crossbreeding practices to this day.

Icelandic horses unique features

One of the most unique features of the Icelandic horse is its distinct gait. Unlike many horse breeds that typically have three natural gaits (walk, trot, and canter), the Icelandic horse showcases two additional remarkable gaits: the **tölt** and the **skeið** or **flying pace**. The **tölt** is a smooth, four-beat lateral gait that offers a comfortable ride even on challenging terrain. The **skeið** is a swift, two-beat gait primarily used in races, capable of reaching speeds similar to a gallop.

Icelandic horses resilience and temperment

Icelandic horses are renowned for their resilience. They have adapted to the challenging and often unpredictable climate of Iceland, sporting thick, double-layered coats that shield them from the cold and wind. These horses are accustomed to living outdoors all year, including winter, which enhances their overall sturdiness.

Icelandic horses are not only beautiful in appearance but also possess a gentle and friendly temperament. Renowned for their intelligence, ease of training, and responsiveness to riders, they are an ideal choice for beginners and children due to their calm demeanor. Experienced riders also appreciate their stamina and versatility.

Icelandic horses and culture

The Icelandic horse plays a significant role in Icelandic culture, deeply rooted in the nation’s history and folklore. It has been an integral part of Icelandic life for over 1,000 years, serving as a mode of transportation, aiding in farming activities, and providing companionship. Today, these majestic creatures are honored in various competitions, breeding showcases, and international trade, showcasing their exceptional traits and lively spirit.

The Icelandic horse embodies more than just a breed; it stands as a powerful symbol of the nation’s strength and autonomy.

In a very short distance away from Landhotel there are Heklu hestar and Skeiðvellir where you can go for a horse ride with a professional guide.

located in the heart of South Iceland. This beautiful valley is known for its
stunning landscapes, historical sites, and fascinating nature.

Þjórsárdalur is named after the river Þjórsá, the longest

waterfalls in þjórsárdalur

There are two waterfalls in Þjórsárdalur which are stunningly

located side by side and it is a worth taking hike to see both those
waterfalls. Those waterfalls are Háifoss and Granni.  Háifoss is one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland
with a drop of 122 meters, and its neighbour Granni is slightly smaller but
impressive about 101 meters high.

To reach those waterfalls you must drive short distance on a
gravel road with is quite accessible during the summer months but can be a
challenge during winter due to snow and ice.
A short distance from the parking area there is a viewing point for both
those waterfalls with a breathtaking views of them and the natural
surroundings.

Another “must see” landmark is the Gjáin, which is such a mindful place.  This small valley is filled with natural Icelandic plants, mosses and wildflowers and small waterfall in a picturesque setting.

historical site

In Þjórsárdalur are also very interesting historical sites named Stöng and Þjóðveldisbærinn.

Stöng is an excavated longhouse from the Viking age and was
indeed buried under volcanic ash from the eruption of Hekla in 1104.  The site gives you a glimpse of early life
and architecture from the old Iceland.

Þjóðveldisbærinn is a reconstructed farm from the Viking era
based from Stöng.  There is a open-air
museum and visitors can learn about the life of medieval Icelandic people.
